Bathroom design

Bathroom design - photo 1

The cramped bathroom is not the one where the architects took too few square meters under the bathroom, but the one where the interior space was incorrectly organized. Even a room with a minimum number of “squares” can be turned after repairs into a sample of advanced design ideas. The main thing – to get rid of unnecessary. Consider a photo of different design options for the bathroom.

The first thing you need to do to make the interior of a small bathroom size becomes much more spacious – TO TAKE ALL OVER. We traditionally continue:

  • keep things not where they really are
  • to keep at hand not only what is needed, but also everything that is “suddenly needed”
  • use the bath improperly

It is because of our lack of organization and because of the habits that had been established since childhood that decorative cosmetics, clothes for washing, 5 bottles of shampoo or shower gel (when one is enough), laundry detergent and cleaning products (their place is in a separate closet or storeroom).

THINGS THAT ARE NOT IN THE BATHROOM
What is there? Where should it be?
Decorative cosmetics Separate locker in the room or corridor
Hair dryer, curling iron and other styling devices Also stored in a residential area. Appear in the bathroom only when necessary.
Mop buckets, household cleaning products Storeroom or separate closet
Dirty clothes The laundry basket can be placed anywhere in the apartment. In addition, in a cramped bathroom the basket takes up space – in a damp room, the laundry will be constantly wet and “rotten”.

IMPORTANT! With proper zoning and design, a combined bathroom may look much more attractive than an imperial bath in a huge hall with a fireplace .

Interior of a small bathroom

For small bathrooms (and in the post-Soviet space, in almost all homes planned for the construction of bathrooms – small ) minimalistic design is ideal. Baroque, colorful ornaments and lots of details will make the small bathroom even closer. Ruffles, frills, roses and intricate curlicues are not our option. In a small space, it will be more appropriate to have clear lines of objects and decor.

Note! Wall mirror is a good way to visually expand the room . However, remember that in high humidity conditions in the bathroom, the mirror will sweat. One of the basic conditions for a stylish bathroom design is sterile cleanliness (walls, floors, glass and faience).

Another way to visually enlarge the space is to decorate the interior in bright colors with individual bright accents. Do not get carried away in pure white. In a completely white room is difficult to be long. In addition, white tile requires daily care and washing. It is better to choose a light shade of any color, and to add a bathroom with elements of a contrasting or the same shade, but more saturated.

Note! The design of the premises works the same rule as when choosing clothes. Horizontal stripes on the walls make the room wider, and the vertical “lift” ceilings.

Instead of hanging or floor cabinets in a small bathroom, it is better to use the built-in furniture – or to mount the shelves with one-piece “cloth” without gaps, so that they completely cover the wall. It seems that this option will reduce the space. In fact, the sensation of closeness is caused not so much by the actual area as by how many separate objects a person can distinguish. A built-in wardrobe or solid rows of shelves are perceived as a single whole, and the bathroom seems to be larger thanks to the psychology of space perception. For the same reason, everything that can be hidden in the closet should be hidden in it.

The more small things and accessories will be visible – the closer the bathroom will seem.

The mirror in the bathroom can be equipped with a spot light, but you should not refuse from the upper lighting. Evenly filling the space with light is another way to expand the bathroom.

Opening the door inward eats an extra half a meter. Change the hinges and install the doors that open to the outside – or put the sliding. This option is more convenient, but more expensive to install and arrange.

Combined bathroom design

Even if the bathroom is separate, one of the options for expanding the space is to combine these rooms . So you should not be sad if the bathroom in your apartment is combined.

Popular layouts for a combined bathroom:

  • simple – the bathroom is located in width, the rest of the furniture is built along the longer side.
  • without corners – a “niche” of a semicircular shape is formed around the bath. Some of the usable space is “eaten up,” but this is easily compensated by placing a large mirror in the bathroom.

Combined bathroom – an uncomfortable decision, if the whole family lives in the apartment, with parents and children, grandparents. In this case, you can use a decorative screen that looks more attractive than oilcloth curtains, and is completely hidden in the closet after bathing (unlike curtains, which create visual noise, even when pushed into a corner).

How to make a corner bathroom

Corner bath – a compromise solution between the rejection of the bath and the usual oval-rectangular shape. It saves space in a small bathroom. And with the shape of the room close to the square, the corner bath would have to take the place of the standard “sister” in typical layouts.

With the placement of the corner bath all is easier than with a rectangular. Corner bath – square or oval – should be in the corner, where she and the place.

The rest of the rules remain exactly the same as when you design a bathroom with a standard oval bath. In addition, the corner bath does not have to be in the form of a square. Modern manufacturers of plumbing offer any configuration:

  • oval (with rounded edge)
  • square (with straight and sharp lines)
  • round (not the best option for tight spaces, but it exists)
  • curved shape (the edge of the bathroom complex shape, while maintaining a right angle)

How to choose furniture

All furniture for this room must be moisture resistant. This rule does not depend on the style or the size of the room. Who would like to change all the furnishings a year after the purchase? An intelligent person does not want to be exact. So, first of all, when choosing bathroom furniture, we focus not on design, but on the quality of performance. The main materials from which the bathroom furniture is made:

  • MDF
  • Chipboard
  • plastic
  • glass
  • natural or artificial stone

Natural wood is a practical and beautiful material. But, unfortunately, not in our realities. European manufacturers, using natural materials in their collection for bathrooms, are guided by the typical layout of Europe, where the usual size of the bathroom is from 4 to 9 square meters. Typical bathroom in our conditions usually does not exceed 4 “squares”. The furniture from a natural tree will not endure the increased humidity and narrowness. Do not torture her or yourself (with prices and the prospect of re-equipment of the premises in the coming years) – stop choosing more practical materials. Or choose the furniture of elite manufacturers from exotic, but moisture-resistant types of wood. Will suit you:

  • teak
  • wenge
  • zebrano
  • iroko

Cabinets or shelves?

In close quarters there is no place for closets! The more freestanding interior items – the closer the room seems. The ideal solution would be a built-in wardrobe to the ceiling.

In addition, the bathroom can be expanded due to the mirror walls of the cabinet. But remember – they will have to regularly wash off the raid. Not once a week, but daily.

Replacing the cabinets can be a one-piece rack of open shelves without doors, or with sliding doors.

Laundry basket

To store laundry in a washing machine before washing is not an option . But it is better to get rid of the basket in the bathroom – move it to a pantry or other room. The main task is to make the laundry basket not stand out from the crowd. If you remove it completely nowhere – hide this “piece of furniture” out of sight, in the built-in wardrobe. In the same way you can do with a washing machine, if the loading mechanism is not top, but frontal. This will solve two problems at once: forever left on a typewriter things will not attract the eye, and the machine itself will organically fit as the bottom element of the cabinet to the ceiling.

Mirror

The mirror is also better to choose a wall and a flat (without accompanying locker), but the maximum size. A full-length mirror can be considered ideal for a small bathroom. If you are not afraid of the prospect of laundering large mirror planes – you can opt out of the mirror as an interior item and make an entire wall mirror.

Modern manufacturers of mirrors cover them with a special film that prevents fogging. These mirrors are much more expensive than “room”, but also serve longer. It may be worth saving energy for cleaning and household chemicals, and immediately buy a mirror, “adapted” to high humidity.

Accessories

The rule of minimalism says: the smaller the room, the smaller the individual elements in it should be. And those that are necessary, should be the minimum size. A glass for toothbrushes, a bottle for liquid soap or a soap dish, other small but important objects, should be combined in color with the walls and not attract the eye. The same goes for a bathrobe (if you keep it in the bathroom) and towels. To add accents, it is better to place several thematic decorative elements in the bathroom – an exotic shell, a painting or a moisture-loving climbing plant. This approach will allow us to add a little carelessness to our extremely functional bathroom, without cluttering up the space with unnecessary details.

How to equip a stylish bathroom in Khrushchev?

Khrushchev – not a sentence. It can be made not only comfortable, but also stylish. And the bathroom – too.

The first thing to do with a bathroom in a typical Khrushchev – get rid of the standard bath and replace it with a modern one. Corner bath will save a bit of space. So what if the previous “cast iron”? High-quality acrylic keeps the temperature just as good. But we freed up some space for a washing machine, which could not be crammed into the kitchen of a Khrushchev house. Instead of hiding the washing machine in the built-in cupboard, you can place it under the sink. The designer, who has thought of this ingenious solution, deserves a monument from all grateful inhabitants of apartments with typical Soviet planning. You can completely abandon the sink in the bathroom.

Another popular and modern way to save space is to install a wall-mounted toilet over the floor. Visually, the room becomes “easier.” The answer to the usual question: no, it will not fall. Fixtures for overhead plumbing withstand loads up to 200 kg.

How to choose a tile?

From this it would be worth starting. After all, the repair and decoration of the bathroom begins with the selection of colors, shades, style and selection of tiles for the floor and walls. The smaller the bathroom – the smaller the tile should be chosen. The psychological effect works very simply – we see not the size of the tiles, but their number. A lot of tiles – the space seems more. If means and patience allow, you can lay out walls with ceramic mosaics. But do not overdo it with contrasts. Too motley mosaic on the walls of a small bathroom will create a kaleidoscope effect, and the room will look even closer.

You should not follow the popular advice and lay out the lower part of the room with dark tiles, and the upper – light. Such a “design” divides the space that we are diligently trying to combine.

Glossy tiles for smaller rooms are better suited than matt. It is more difficult to care for, but it reflects the light and performs the same role as the mirror – it visually expands the room.

How to make design modern

Design styles are almost more than the interior designers themselves. In the case of a small bathroom, all directions working with the “antique” theme will have to be abandoned. But this is rather a forced plus, no matter how strange such a formulation may seem.

The wealth of decoration, gold and glitter in the interior elements, fancy ornaments, an abundance of draperies and non-functional “decorations” – all this was invented in the era of stone castles with spacious halls. What there was no need in the Middle Ages, so it is in additional square meters. A modern person living in a house of typical planning cannot afford to squander precious space.

The best solution for a typical bathroom will be high-tech styles or minimalism. The classic works well, if you adapt it a bit. Fortunately, all three styles do not go out of fashion, develop and remain relevant.

Less details, practicality, clean straight or smooth lines – current trends in modern design, which could not be better suited for a small bathroom.

Bathroom design with shower

If you want not only to create a feeling of extra space in the bathroom, but also to really get some extra space, maybe you don’t really need a bath?

If you can live without a bath – install a shower stall. If the minimum size of the “lying” bath is about 140 cm in length, then the cabin takes up from 70 cm. Half a meter, won back from the architects who planned the old houses – by the standards of modern bathrooms this is an absolute victory over space.

If life without a bath is not at all a joy – you can find a compromise. For example, to install a shower cabin, in the lower part of which there is a sitting bath. Of course, it is still impossible to fully lie down and relax in the hot water – but you can sit and relax in the hot water.

The walls of the shower in a small bathroom should be made of transparent, not frosted glass. And always clean. Then the shower will not attract attention, dissolving in the interior.

How to organize a repair

The main problem of repairing a bathroom in a Soviet-built house is not narrowness, but communication. Pipe outlets are rigidly fixed, and major redevelopment requires considerable effort and cost – if it is possible at all. In second place in complexity – the alignment of the walls. The tile is placed only on completely flat walls. If you do not plan to periodically glue the fallen tiles, repair should begin with plaster and plaster walls.

Before the re-equipment of communications, it is worth writing the design of your new bathroom. There are several programs to perform such tasks – they are easy to find on the Internet. But you can complete the project in the old-fashioned way, by hand, on a piece of paper. The main thing is for you to be clear about what you want – and how much space you have for making design fantasies come true. Do not forget to familiarize yourself with our material on the design of toilets !
