Choosing a ceiling design option
Any redecoration starts from the ceiling, the interior of the room as a whole depends on its completeness, design and construction . To date, the options for finishing the ceiling a great many. They are selected based on the preferences of the owners, the purpose of the room and, of course, the cost. When there is an urgent issue of economy, the classic budgetary options for finishing are chosen – coloring and whitewashing, wallpapering or foam polystyrene panels. Relatively inexpensive, but also more practical and aesthetic are suspended ceilings. And, of course, when the issue of the price of repairs is not so acute, the choice may fall on the elite stretch ceilings.
Let’s try to describe in detail each type of finish to help you choose the best option.
Painting and whitewashing the ceiling
One of the most ancient, laborious and dirty ways, requiring a perfectly flat ceiling surface with neat joints of ceiling tiles. Everyone remembers how much whitening has to be washed from the floor and furniture after painting or whitewashing the ceiling. In addition, it is rather difficult to achieve an ideal monochromatic surface without streaks using chalk solution or ceiling paint.
On the other hand, coloring and whitewashing – was and remains the most budget repair option. And it must be admitted that a qualitatively reconstructed painted ceiling looks quite neat and aesthetically pleasing. Plus, at your discretion, you can tint the white color in other shades.
Pasting the ceiling wallpaper
This is a less “dirty” and time-consuming way than whitewashing, but just as inexpensive, especially along with hanging and tensioning systems. Design options – a huge variety, from combinations of wallpapers of different patterns to their coloring in any color.
If you use special wallpaper for the ceiling (ideally, liquid wallpaper), they will retain their original appearance for a long time. It is not recommended to use them in the bathroom or in the kitchen. In addition, the ceiling wallpaper is unlikely to smooth out the irregularities of the ceiling, so the surface to be glued should be as flat as possible.
Pasting sheets of polystyrene foam
This option is very similar to finishing wallpapering, so we will not dwell on it for a long time. The only thing, unlike wallpaper, ceiling tiles made of expanded polystyrene are able to resist moisture and smooth out small flaws in the surface of the ceiling.
A good option for finishing the ceiling are PVC panels. They are durable, durable, have good sound insulation and are resistant to moisture and high temperatures. The latter allows their use with LED and halogen spotlights. PVC panels perfectly mask the uneven ceiling, pipes and wiring. In general, it is a budget alternative to more expensive podshivnym and suspended ceilings.
This is a versatile and inexpensive ceiling mount that allows you to bring all sorts of design ideas to life, to hide any surface defects, unevenness, lighting, wiring, etc.
Perhaps the only drawback of drywall, in his fear of moisture, so it is not suitable for a bathroom. Otherwise, drywall – almost perfect finishing material.
- Sheathing any, even untreated surface;
- The ability to hide wiring, pipes, ceiling joints and other irregularities;
- Getting a completely flat and smooth surface;
- Creating a multi-level ceiling;
- Conducting a built-in lighting system;
- Excellent thermal insulation and the ability to maintain a microclimate in the room;
- Heat resistance and flame retardant;
- Low cost, compared with suspended ceilings.
Unlike previous methods of finishing, you will have to tinker with the installation of drywall panels – install the frame, install the plates, and carry out the subsequent decorative finishing. Depending on the unevenness of the ceiling and the amount of concealed wires and communications, you can lose 5-10 cm in height. On the other hand, these are minor drawbacks, because as a result you get a beautiful, inexpensive, perfectly flat ceiling of the design you like.
If you are interested in plasterboard ceilings, be sure to read our article about it !
In addition to the aforementioned plasterboard ceilings, suspended ceilings can be made of fibreboard and MDF. It is durable, safe, moisture-resistant finishes, a huge color and textured diversity.
MDF and fiberboard can imitate wood, tile, raw brickwork or natural stone. The surface of the plates is easily painted with enamel and oil paints, pasted over with a film, decorated with slats and other elements, thereby creating an imitation of the beams. Such a hemmed ceiling will allow you to create the “effect of an expensive ceiling” and embody a lot of interesting design solutions.
The most popular type of ceiling of the average price category. A suspended ceiling is a design when various finishing materials are fastened to a wooden or metal frame. With it, you can easily hide all the flaws and irregularities of the ceiling, wiring and communications, you can conduct a climate ventilation system, install built-in lights.
- Cassette ceilings – durable, durable, moisture-proof and fireproof steel or aluminum plates (cassettes), often used in public spaces – restaurants, hotels, offices, medical facilities, etc.,
- Armstrong-type ceilings are a budget option of finishing that is widely spread both for administrative premises and home rooms. These are easy-to-install, inexpensive, aesthetic plates of extruded mineral fiber, which have thermal insulation, fire resistance and increased light reflectance, which makes it possible to save money on lighting.
- Rack ceilings are very durable, impact-resistant, moisture-proof and fireproof metal ceiling. It does not need delicate care, does not rot, does not accumulate dirt and dust.
- Mirror ceilings – allow you to create a rich, spacious and stylish design with lots of light and depth of space.
The latest type of ceilings – elite modern fashion stretch ceilings. In addition to the fact that this type of design looks very expensive and stylish, it is also a fairly practical way to finish the ceiling.
- Stretch ceilings create an absolutely perfect surface, hide the asymmetrical shapes of the room, cover all irregularities and communications;
- Stretch ceilings retain considerable weight, in case you decide to flood the neighbors;
- The material does not pass moisture, which allows its use in all rooms without exception.
- A very large variety of design – from the choice of color or texture (matte, glossy or satin) to the application of photo printing, sparkles, jewelry and other things.
Unfortunately, installation of stretch ceilings without drawbacks will not do:
- This is the most expensive type of finish;
- They can only be installed by professionals with the help of special equipment (gas gun);
- The canvas is afraid of mechanical damage, sharp objects, easily punctured.
Stretch ceilings are not installed in cold rooms without heating or with temperatures below +5, they lose their technological properties.
Choose a ceiling design depending on the room
Now you know the features of each type of finish and you can make a choice.
But remember that the choice of material for finishing the ceiling strongly depends on the place. You can not paste wallpaper with the ceiling in the bathroom, and hope that in a month the appearance of the ceiling will remain in its original form. Most likely, your wallpaper will be divorced, if not peeled off.
In the living room
The ceiling in the living room must be smooth, aesthetic, corresponding to the overall interior of the room. Of all the above options fit almost everyone.
Want modern and expensive – suspended ceiling. A small space of the room that needs to be expanded is a mirrored suspended ceiling. Limited repair budget – plaster ceiling. And the most budget option is wallpapering, provided that you have a completely flat ceiling surface.
Perhaps not a suitable option for a living room would be a suspended cassette ceiling or plastic trim panels. They are more suitable for administrative premises, offices or medical institutions, but are unlikely to give your living room more style and comfort. Although, of course, this is a matter of preference.
In the bedroom
The choice of the ceiling in the bedroom is not much different from the choice of the ceiling in the living room. The main requirement is that he should not focus too much on himself and have to rest.
Not the best option in the bedroom would be a mirrored ceiling. He too focuses attention on himself, does not allow to relax, especially considering that in the bedroom, in the prone position, your eyes will constantly rest on him. For this reason, it is not necessary to install a metal rack ceiling there. If you want to visually expand and deepen the space, it is best to use the glossy surface of the stretch ceiling.
Very well in the bedroom looks drywall, MDF panels, textured ceiling tiles, ceilings.
For a child’s room, you can indulge in a whole flight of fantasy and bold solutions like colorful illustrations, cartoon sky, stars, etc.

In the kitchen
The kitchen is a place with constant evaporation, temperature changes and special hygienic requirements, therefore the kitchen ceiling must be moisture-resistant, fireproof, eco-friendly and easy to clean. Whitewashing and painting the ceiling in the kitchen, as well as wallpapering are long gone, because of its fragility. On such ceilings, stains quickly appear, stains, they fall off, peel off, and because of the large accumulation of steam become an excellent medium for the reproduction of fungi.
If there is a question of price, it is better to use laminated polystyrene tiles or relatively inexpensive PVC panels.
With large irregularities, the best solutions will be plaster, suspended or stretch ceilings.
In the bathroom
Bathroom requirements are the same as for the kitchen. Due to the large number of fumes, the risk of accumulation of fungi and pathogenic bacteria, the need for regular cleaning of surfaces, plasterboard ceilings, ceilings covered with wallpaper or finished with chipboard and particleboard without special impregnation will not fit into the bathroom.
Few people can boast a large area of the bathroom, so suspended slatted and mirrored ceilings would be an ideal option to expand the space and add more light and shine.
Plus, they are quite easy to care for, they are perfectly cleaned from divorce and plaque.
A stretch ceiling, which is also ideal for a bathroom, can be a more expensive alternative.

Choosing a ceiling for home
The low ceiling height in Khrushchev, unfortunately, is not a myth, but a harsh reality. Their maximum height is 2.40 m or even less, if the apartment was replaced and floor screed. Naturally, in such conditions it is quite difficult to install a suspended or stretch ceiling, which steals from an already small height of 5-10 cm. But it is still possible if the real surface of the ceiling does not have too large transitions, and the ceiling can be installed with minimal loss of space .
In Khrushchev it is recommended to install ceilings with a mirror or glossy surface for visual expansion and deepening of space. Proper placement of fixtures will also have a similar effect.
For modern new building
Unlike Khrushchev, with the choice of ceiling for new buildings is much easier. Here and the ceiling height is higher and the quality is newer, so you can choose almost any type of finish. It should only be taken into account that within 2-3 years, the new building will sit down a bit, which may affect the geometry of the premises. Therefore, finishing materials, especially for the ceiling, should be installed with some margin. Ideally for new buildings fit all types of suspension and tensioning systems.
For a private house
In a private house there is an acute need for thermal insulation, therefore, the ceiling material should keep heat in the house well. Since the outer covering of the ceiling should also take into account the layer of insulation (made of expanded clay, mineral wool or foam), it is best to use frame structures – suspended and stretched ceilings.
For suspended ceilings, firstly, a frame is assembled for fastening the external ceiling (tapes, drywall, etc.), and then a layer of insulation is laid in the space between the profiles. For stretch ceilings, on the contrary, they first create a frame of bars for insulation, lay it, and only then pull the outer fabric.
It depends on the choice of the light source and the correct placement of the light which room you end up with – small and dark, large, but cold or warm and cozy.
Chandeliers and lamps
The classic lighting option is a chandelier in the center of the ceiling. It gives a lot of warm light, it is great for almost any kind of interiors, gives the room an elegant comfort.
Remember the weight of the lamp! It is not safe to mount a heavy chandelier on lightweight drywall, it is better to mount it to the concrete base of the ceiling.
Unfortunately, this type of lighting is not very suitable for modern suspended and stretch ceilings, therefore it is gradually replaced by integrated lighting.
- They allow you to create the necessary lighting around the perimeter of the entire ceiling and make it a certain pattern, if it is provided by the designer;
- Easy installation of lamps and replacement of light bulbs;
- Security. Spotlights do not heat the ceiling;
- Rotary models allow you to change the direction of lighting as needed;
- This is a relatively inexpensive way to light.
A very unusual and non-trivial approach to lighting rooms are LED strips. You can not only choose an unusual color of lighting, but even create a real light show at home, thanks to the light-dynamic effects – smoothly changing colors, light and music, waves, etc.
Current trends in the design of ceilings
What do ceiling designers recommend today?
- Light neutral tones make the room more spacious, lighter, higher. If you decide to use patterns or bright colors – accentuate them in one small place so that the room does not become coarse.
- Multi-level ceilings allow to divide the space perfectly into zones. For example, a bulging portion of the ceiling perfectly focuses attention on the bed in the bedroom.
- Glossy, mirror and lacquered surface diffuses the light, creating the effect of 3-dimensional space.
- A monochromatic light gypsum ceiling with LED strips located at the edges is ideal for a low room. Such an illusion will visually lift the ceiling.
- The ceiling, lined with wood or clapboard under the tree, together with light furniture gives the interior naturalness, wealth and comfort.
- The glossy wallcovering of the bathroom fits perfectly with the frosted ceiling.
DIY ceiling decoration
The eternal question of repair is to do it yourself or give a job to professionals. In fact, many of the above-mentioned methods for decorating the ceiling are not particularly difficult and may well be performed independently. You can easily whitewash or paint the ceiling, glue it with wallpaper or expanded polystyrene plates. With a certain skill and the study of video lessons you can put a gypsum board or MDF panel on the frame.
The only type of ceiling, the installation of which is recommended to be entrusted to specialists – stretch ceiling. Firstly, because at least a small practice is necessary for its installation. Secondly, because the fabric is stretched with the help of a special expensive gas gun, which you should not buy for one repair.
We offer several video tutorials on self-decoration of ceilings, and you already decide how these methods you can do.
